Witchcraft and paganism
witchcraft here but the dark mori is over here: disheveledmoriwitch
I’m a pagan that promotes a trans friendly pagan community.
Its important to make everyone in the community feel welcomed and safe
- New Witch: I am so excited I am going to a pagan store to buy an athame tomorrow so I can get started doing magic and rituals!
- Bitter Experienced Witch: you do not need tools to do witchcraft. Your mind is the most important tool. You should just use a butter knife or your finger instead of buying something nice for yourself at a pagan shop.
- Bitter Experienced Witch: photo blogs their altar covered with cool stuff including a sharp shiny athame five minutes later.
Dear “Gatekeepers” of the Pagan Community,
Shh. Shhhhhh. Sit down a minute. Breathe. Whisper some soothing Elvish words to your bosoms.
Do beginners sometimes have problematic beliefs? Sure. Does education and friendly guidance help with that? You betcha.
Does berating and...
no offence but why are so many witchcraft symbols and ideas cissexist?
Wicca tends to be the practice that focuses more on fertility, rather than witchcraft.
And unfortunately, there are a lot of transphobic people in the community, but people sort of ignore it or brush it aside because ~*spirituality*~
I actually went to a lovely panel about the importance and recognition of nonbinary and transgendered deities. It is definitely a thing talked about. You’re not the only one noticing these stinky gender binary trends.
Thank you for the clarification and explanation! That’s so cool that there are deities who aren’t cis. I don’t supposed you have a list of trans/nb deities you could refer me to? If not it’s fine!
Dionysus is pretty fab. His depictions show him of both a mature man, an androgynous youth, and even a woman. The literature often speaks of her being womanly or literally translated as “Man-woman”. Dionysus is literally a god of Trans individuals and intersex folk.
Aphrodite has a few tales of inspiring homosexual relationships as well as hetetrosexual ones. She is a goddess of all love after all~ In the poetry of Sappho, she is a patron goddess of various other sexual orientations, especially female homosexuality.
To name a few others (not all deities, but definitely worth looking at): Aphroditus, Hermaphroditus, Erotes. Caeneus is a trans male deity.
I don’t know too much about Shintoism, but Inari is depicted in various ways and various genders.
Enki, a supreme god from Babylon, is a god very accepting towards androgynous and nonbinary individuals. There is even a myth of him wanting to create a “third gender” for these individuals.
Innana also could see a patron of nonbinary and trans individuals as well.
A few that I know of~
Now, not all witches work with deities, but there certainly are polytheistic witches.
I could definitely start an entirely different subject on the importance of LGBTA+ themes in witchcraft, how they are relevant, and how they’ve been around for a while.
Do you know of any trans/nb Egyptian gods?
Not myself, but check out this post
Manannán mac Lir has a heavy emphasis in myths as being “neither this nor that” and there’s a fair amount of SPG that they’re nonbinary, on a similar note
Nonbinary Manánnan Mac Lir is definitely SPG :)
Also, a SPG between a friend and me is that Brighid supports ALL women–trans women, cis women, any women!
I love this post!
But honest to goodness, a lot of magic is very cissexist, transphobic, or has a very strong emphasis on fertility
And not that the fetility thing is bad, but not all women and not all dfab people are capable of having children or comfortable with it
As an infertile dfab person I think this is what probably turned me off of magic in the first place
Magic should be open to people of all bodies and genders
I wouldn’t say that it is magic, but rather many of the religions that practice it (since witchcraft and you don’t have to believe in any deity to practice it). Wicca is not the representative of the magic community and I remember using it as a gateway to magic but then stopping as I disliked a the whole cissexist nature of many of the beliefs.

OK but-
Fertility isn’t only about procreation???
I just wrote a paper on this for my druidry dedication.
Fertility can also mean creative energy, making things, cultivation, cultivating relationships, blessings… I don’t know why so many magic people want to make it about male and female… Fertility does not belong to cis people. To hell with that whole idea.
Trans fertility
Trans fertility isn’t just an abstract concept of creation. Trans fertility can literally mean procreation. Trans couples can procreate. We really need to destroy the idea that procreation belongs to cis people. Trans people can be fertile, trans people can procreate, fertility in the context of procreation is a trans issue. Celebrating fertility means celebrating trans people. The fuck outta here with this cis-normativity bs.
